Bay Area Dog Rescues


So, you want a dog? You better take excellent care of that dog, or I'm coming after you. Many dogs are thrown away because people pick the wrong breed for their situations. Find some sites that will describe the different breeds so you can decide which could be a good fit for you.

Unfortunately, people abandon every type of dog. You can find exactly what you're looking for without resorting to breeders or pet stores. Also, widen the scope of your search. A mix or a breed you hadn't considered before may be exactly the right dog for you. A puppy is a whole lot more work and needs much more attention than a young adult. Be open minded and enjoy the adventure.

Please check out kill shelters and "humane societies" first to find your dog (on this page). You will be saving a life. Of course, the work that rescues do is among the most noble of all vocations. But in shelters, time is of the essence, and rescues do get most of their animals from shelters.

This is Milo. I thought my Gigi was one of a kind, but Milo is yet another.
I couldn't let him stay at the Alameda Shelter where I spotted him;
this unique dog had to be Gigi's brother (same estimated age, same side of the Bay) .
So Hopalong Rescue helped me and I became his foster mom.
He has been adopted by a wonderful couple and their 3 lb. Pomeranian in Oakland

Buddy - therapy dog visits


My sweet Livia died March 19, 2009, after a sudden and brief illness.
I'm grateful for the time we had, though it could never be enough.


Brindle was my sister Sheryl's dog. Brindle lived to 15 and had a full, beautiful life.
She was much loved and will be missed. Here she is immortalized in an etching by Sheryl.
